Right to Information Campaign held in Chennai
 

The Right to Information Campaign was held successfully at Adyar and Mandaiveli, Chennai on July 22 and 23, 2006.

There was good response from the citizens; many participants showed keen enthusiasm to learn more about RTI and how it could truly help the common man and woman to get over their day to day problems with the local governments and civic authorities.

Mr. S.Ve. Shekher, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Tamil Nadu, the elected leader of the local Mylapore constituency, participated and spoke on the importance of RTI and offered to extend support for RTI implementation.

Mr. Kris Dev, e-Governance and RTI Implementation Consultant and Organizer of the Right to Informaion Campaign welcomed the gathering and spoke of the importance of the RTI Act 2005.

Ms. Harini Narayanan, and Mr. Varun from Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG) and TN Right to Infirmation Campaign and Mr. Guru, Ms. Sharadha, Mr. Varath and other volunteers from  Chennai RTI, explained the various provisions of the Act and how best to file an application appeal. Some counselling was also done to help the citizens adress their grievances.

There was a request from the citizens to conduct regularly such RTI Campaigns, for regular consultations / interaction between elected representatives / officials and the citizens, to raise the awareness level to citizens' rights.

RIGHT TO INFORMATION CAMPAIGN

The Tamil Nadu Right to Information Campaign is organizing public awareness campaigns on the RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT 2005, one of the most powerful acts in the hands of the common man and woman, to seek any information on the functioning of the Government and the quality of service rendered to the citizens, to make the actions transparent and accountable to the citizens.

The campaign is being conducted in various parts of Tamil Nadu and was launched on July 12. A series of workshop is going on at Bharathiar Memorial Hall, Triplicane, Chennai  betwen 4 to 6 pm.

Campaign is also planned at:

1. Kasturiba Nagar Residents' Welfare Community Hall, 3rd Cross Street, Next to Nilgiris / Ambica Appalam Depot on Saturday July 22 between 4 to 6 pm.

2. Kalyannagar Association Hall, West Circular Road, Mandaveli, on Sunday July 23 between 4 to 6 pm.

Assistance would be extended to citizens to file applications under RTI.
